Discover Donates $100,000 To South Florida Boys & Girls Clubs

November 8, 2010

MIAMI, Nov 08, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Discover Financial Services, new Orange Bowl title sponsor, today announced that it will be awarding a $100,000 grant benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The money will be used to upgrade and enhance their current facilities and to provide scholarships for children to enroll in the Clubs.

"Boys & Girls Clubs are one of the most popular charities of choice for our cardmembers and our employees," said Harit Talwar, president of U.S. Cards for Discover. "Our partnership with the Orange Bowl gives us the opportunity to show South Florida and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and Broward counties the Discover tradition of giving back to our communities."

Discover recently became the title sponsor for the 2011-2014 Orange Bowl Games and the 2013 BCS National Championship Game. According to Orange Bowl President Antonio L. Argiz, Discover and the Orange Bowl share a common goal to enrich the lives of children.

"Both Discover and the Orange Bowl are committed to helping children achieve success on the field and in the classroom," says Argiz. "With this partnership, South Floridians can expect the Discover Orange Bowl to continue as a champion of our community, while presenting a premier college football experience on January 3."

As part of their charitable mission of supporting educational initiatives, Discover has partnered with local Boys & Girls Clubs across the country providing them with funding for after school programs and other initiatives that keep children off the streets and in a safe learning environment.

Talwar presented Brian Quail, CEO of Broward County Boys & Girls Club and Alex Rodriguez-Roig, executive director of the Miami-Dade County Boys & Girls Club, with a ceremonial $100,000 check at the Marti Huizenga Unit in Hollywood, FL. The money will be split among the Clubs. Some of the Club enhancements include building an imagination career room where young children can act out all sorts of jobs from doctors to policemen and restoring athletic facilities. Funding will also support scholarships for many children to enroll in Boys & Girls Clubs for free.
