Discover Gives Back to Education Through Its 2011 Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes

Apple Valley, MN May 25, 2011– Discover today announced that it is donating $25,000 to Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota as part of this year’s Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes promotion. Eastview was chosen by Mary Lee Vetter, also of Apple Valley, an Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes March monthly winner who served as a volunteer coordinator at the school and had three sons who graduated from Eastview.

Throughout the year, every purchase made on a Discover card is automatically entered for a chance to win one of 150 daily prizes and a monthly prize of $25,000, which Discover will match with a $25,000 donation to a public school of the winner’s choosing. A grand prize of $1 million will be awarded at the end of the year.

Vetter won the monthly prize when she made a $40 purchase in March at a local Cub Foods grocery store with her Discover card. She plans on donating half of her winnings to charity.

“This is a total blessing to me and my family,” said Vetter. What is even more of a blessing is that winning this prize gives me an additional opportunity to give back to the school I have dedicated much of my life to since it was built 14 years ago.”

Vetter said that she was on the parent/administration steering committee before the site where Eastview High School was to be built was selected. She also said she originated Eastview’s “Lightning” logo and that while she is no longer a volunteer coordinator at the school, she continues to volunteer in the school’s Lightning Café which she started in 2001.

Dr. Randall Peterson, principal of Eastview High School, said some of the donation will be used to enhance the library’s media center and will support the Eastview Learning Community literacy initiatives.

“Mary’s time and dedication to this school has already made such a big difference to the lives of the students at Eastview. This donation is simply an incredible gift on behalf of an incredible person,” said Peterson. “We commend Discover for supporting educators to make a difference for our youth and look forward to using this donation to enhance the programs we offer to students here at Eastview.”

“We believe supporting education is critical,” said Sarah Alter, vice president of portfolio marketing at Discover. “We know consumers will appreciate not only the great prizes we’re offering with this sweepstakes, but also the chance to make a difference at public schools across the country.”

There is no purchase, transaction or card application necessary to enter or win the Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes. For official rules, terms and conditions, and the list of participating issuers of Discover cards, please visit www.DiscoverGiveaway.com.
