Discover Gives Back to Education Through Its 2011 Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes
Emerson, NE., Dec. 21, 2011– Discover® today announced that it is donating $25,000 to Emerson-Hubbard Elementary School in Emerson, Nebraska as part of this year’s Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes promotion. Emerson-Hubbard was chosen by Reed Christenson, an Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes September monthly winner whose wife Mary is a former Emerson resident and attended the school as a child. Discover presented both Christensen and Emerson-Hubbard with ceremonial $25,000 checks at a school assembly held this morning
Throughout the year, every purchase made on a Discover card is automatically entered for a chance to win one of 150 daily prizes and a monthly prize of $25,000, which Discover will match with a $25,000 donation to a public school of the winner’s choosing. A grand prize of $1 million will be awarded at the end of the year.
Christensen won the monthly prize when he made a $75.00 purchase at a Shell Gas Station with his Discover card in September.
“When I first received the call from Discover, I was pleasantly shocked at the news that I had won,” said Christensen. “When they told me that I can choose a public school to also receive $25,000, I had to consult with my wife on such an important decision. We felt that Emerson-Hubbard Elementary School could really use this generous gift and want to thank Discover for giving us this opportunity.”
James Northwick, principal of Emerson-Hubbard Elementary School, was also shocked by the news. “The call was so surprising that it was hard to believe at first. After I talked with Mary it became more real. I would like to thank Mary and Reed for picking our school with this wonderful surprise. There are many different things we may do with this gift and I’ll have to meet with the teachers to discuss those options.”
