Stevensville Resident And Kent Island High School Receive $25,000 From Discover

Discover® Gives Back to Education Through Its 2011 Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes

Stevensville, MD, April 11, 2011– Discover® today announced that Kent Island High School in Stevensville received a $25,000 donation from Discover as part of this year’s Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes promotion. Kent Island High was chosen by Seth Sterling Jr., also of Stevensville, an Everyday Giveaway Sweepstakes winner whose three sons attend the high school.

Throughout the year, every purchase made on a Discover card is automatically entered for a chance to win one of 150 daily prizes and a monthly prize of $25,000, which Discover will match with a $25,000 donation to a public school of the winner’s choosing. A grand prize of $1 million will be awarded at the end of the year.

Sterling won the monthly prize when he made a $5 purchase in January at a local Safeway grocery store with his Discover card.

“I am more excited for the school than for myself," said Sterling.

Sterling said he and his wife Kathleen are impressed by the dedication of the school staff and their attention to the students’ educational and emotional well-being. He said whenever he has been concerned about an issue for one of their boys, the staff has quickly and decisively taken action.

“My wife and I greatly appreciate the work of assistant principal Brad Engel and the staff at Kent Island High School in creating a safe and effective learning environment for our boys and the students at the school," said Sterling.

Engel is a 2005 Maryland Teacher of the Year award recipient and author of the book, “The Kid That No One Wanted."

Denise L. Hershberger, principal of Kent Island High School, said the donation will purchase additional materials and technology.

“Thank you to the Sterling family for sharing their sons with us and kindly providing KIHS the opportunity to continue making a difference for our students through this donation," Hershberger said. “We commend Discover for supporting educators to make a difference for our youth."

Hershberger also said the donation will help further the school’s efforts of providing a positive learning environment for its students.

“We believe supporting education is critical," said Sarah Alter, vice president of portfolio marketing at Discover. “We know consumers will appreciate not only the great prizes we’re offering with this sweepstakes, but also the chance to make a difference at public schools across the country."

There is no purchase, transaction or card application necessary to enter or win the sweepstakes. For official rules, terms and conditions, and the list of participating issuers of Discover cards, please visit
